Barriers of Separation

April 30, 2010

Theatres are places where the public can go and forget their lives and join with other members of public to enter this fantasy world, a space where anything can be created, where your imagination can run wild. A place where it becomes an escapism from the hustle and bustle of peoples lives, but a separate world, the world we all escape to to relax.

However, it is a place in modern society where social class can still be seen, even though various people from different communities come together, there is sometimes that separation seen in the theatre which is created by the seats because the public tend to pay different prices for different seats. Barriers of Separation enters the world of theatres, but it explores seating and whether social class is still around today in modern society looking at 19th Century theatres through to modern day theatres.

Theatres

February 27, 2010

After spending four hours on a 5 minute presentation i decide to create a blog post.

I will be exploring social class through theatre seating and how the audience pay different prices for different seats.

I want to photograph empty theatre seating usually full of an excited audience and the different levels seen within a theatre which decides how much you pay for a ticket to see a show. Through this I want to explore whether social class is still around in modern society today compared to the victorian era. Most levels in each theatre range from two to four levels, these include the stalls, circle, upper circle and grand tier, some theatres also have choir seating and boxes. Depending on the show you will go and see most theatres charge different rates for different level seating the most expensive is either the stalls or the boxes and the least expensive is the upper circle or the grand tier.

I want to capture a wide range of theatres to photograph from the 19th century theatres up to the modern theatres today around south Wales and the Midlands and compare the theatre seating to explore whether there is a difference in seating when you go and watch a show or if the audience are all paying for the same type of seating.

The photographs will be created using a 5×4 large format camera using colour film. They will include a mass amount of empty seating which create many different patterns depending on the angle of the photograph and in some you will see levels of the theatre and others the frame will be full of empty seats. Along with the photographs I also want to include the seating plans of the theatres to emphasise the social class and how we all pay different prices for different seats within a theatre.

Landscape

June 24, 2009

I decided to go on a walk yesterday in the little village of Whitnash. Only went for an hour because I wore jeans and it was too hot to walk in jeans with the weather this summer. However, I found some beautiful horses in a field and ran into sheep in a decaying barn/shed which looked how i felt… scared. This was because they looked like they were going to charge towards me any minute rather than run away. I took a roll of 120 black and white film to see my landscape skills waiting for them to be developed. At the weekend im off to Banbury steam rally, the highlight of my childhood. Seeing these amazing large engines pulling people in the tug of war and receiving sweets after, stalls and engines, arts and crafts they have something for everyone I find them enchanting places to be.
